The next DC Vegan Drinks, a monthly social event I started in DC will be hosted at Great Sage in Clarksville Maryland. This will be the 18th event, we usually have them down in DC, this will be the second time Great Sage has hosted it. Gene Baur  founder of Farm Sanctuary in Watkins Glen NY will be speaking and 10% of the nights sales will go to Farm Sanctuary. Great Sage will be offering a delicious Five Course Vegan Dinner for 45 bucks for the event. You need to call Great Sage to reserve a spot, you can find out more info at http://dcvegandrinks.org

Vegan “Eggs” Benedict

posted: April 28th, 2010 | filed under: Food, Vegan | tags: , , | No Comments »

The other day I made Vegan “Eggs” Benedict, they were so freakin delicious I wanted to share the recipe, so here it is! Recipe is from ChooseVeg.com. Also pictured scrambled tofu and a grapefruit.

  • 1 lb. extra firm tofu
  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 4 Tbsp. nondairy margarine
  • 8 oz. nondairy sour cream (try Tofutti brand—www.tofutti.com)
  • 1 tsp. paprika
  • 1/2 tsp. nutmeg
  • Pinch of cayenne
  • 1 Tbsp. lemon juice
  • 4 vegan English muffins, toasted (or 8 slices of toast)
  • 8 slices of faux Canadian bacon (try Yves brand—www.yves.com)
  • 8 slices of tomato

Preheat the oven to 450ºF. Drain the tofu, cut it into 8 slices, and arrange it in a single layer in an oiled 9″x13″ baking dish.

In a small bowl, whisk together the vinegar, salt, and olive oil and pour the mixture over the tofu. Bake the tofu for 20 minutes, basting it occasionally and turning it over after 10 minutes. Pour off any excess liquid and bake the tofu for a few more minutes–until it is brown and crispy.

To make the hollandaise sauce, melt the nondairy margarine in a small saucepan over medium heat. Stir in the nondairy sour cream, paprika, nutmeg, cayenne, and lemon juice. Make sure that the mixture is heated through but don’t allow it to boil.

Top each English muffin half or slice of toast with a slice of tofu, Canadian “bacon,” and tomato, and a generous spoonful of hollandaise sauce. Serve immediately.

This is the second version of the DC Vegan Drinks logo, this one is a little cleaner than the first one. The colors are pretty much the same, I darkened the glass a little and used new fonts.

DC Veg FestDC Veg Fest is just around the corner, next weekend to be exact. For those of you out there that are Vegan, Vegetarian, or are just curious about it I would highly recommend attending. It will be held at George Washington University from 12pm to 6pm. There are going to be some great speakers including Rory Freedman (Author of Skinny Bitch), Dr. Michael Greger, Wendy Rieger, and many more. There will also be many great exhibitors and vendors (the best part!). DC Vegan and I will unfortunatily not be able to make it this year. But I know its going to be a great time!!!

DC Veg Fest site is also one of my designs. (not the logo)
